Preventing Gum Infection And Preventing Your Overall Health From Diseases

Most of us visit the dentist to have our teeth checked for any symptoms of gum infection and for professional cleaning; however dental visit is not just about our dental health but also about our overall health. There is a clear evidence of the connection of our dental health to the development of certain medical conditions that affects out dental health.

Simple bleeding and swelling of the gums should not be neglected; it can be a symptom of gum infection. Gum infection can progress to periodontal disease and can result to pain and discomfort.  Research had been linking gum disease and heart disease, it has been discovered that the harmful bacteria that causes gum infection is also the same bacteria responsible for certain cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Harmful bacteria that is responsible for gum disease is not eliminated, it can spread to other parts of the body by entering the blood streams. Pregnant women are also at risk of having a gum infection due to hormonal fluctuations and a weak immune system, resulting to premature and low –weight babies. If you are at risk or have a gum infection it is important to pay attention to your oral health. Gum infection or gum disease can be controlled or reversed. It is also necessary to pay your dentist a visit every six months for dental examination and professional cleanings, gum infection can be diagnosed and treated early by your dentist through regular dental visits.
